The book Paper and Water
Once again, to mark the Holland Paper Biennial 2000, a special publication is being launched, this time the theme will be
water and paper. Eight experts in the field of paper will discuss the different facets of this theme. These include
the invention of the 'Hollander', a replacement for the hammer-trough to improve paper pulp, watermarks in banknotes, water
as a source of deterioration in paper, paper made from the water hyacinth, Japanese 'tear-drop' paper, the Japanese marbling
technique of Suminagashi and using the structure of the laid pattern of wire screens to date 17th century paper. The authors
of these essays are Henk Voorn, Peter Koeze, Henk Porck, René Teygeler, Rogier Uitenboogaart, Corinna Herrmann,
Theo Laurentius and Peter Gentenaar.
The work of the 24 artists taking part in the exhibition also appears in the book, along with a number of samples of the paper
they use. The books' designer is Loes Schepens, who also designed the books Tactile Paper (1996) and Fire & Paper (1998).

Paper and Water (Dutch/English) is published by Gentenaar & Torley Publishers, Rijswijk. Design is by Loes Schepens of Kader,
The Hague. The book contains 200 pages, 65 illustrations in full colour and 16 paper samples. Retail price will be NLG 79,50.
