Mariëlle van den Bergh (Netherlands)

"Although paper isn’t the only material I use, through the years it has regularly reappeared in my body of work. (…) For the installation ‘Space and Spirit’ (2001), I worked with rolls of Chinese paper. The paper was cut into small snippets and soaked in bookbinder’s glue, making them semi-transparent. The objects were formed on moulds with frames constructed of pulp cane. From within the depths of the paper objects, a light glowed and the sound of breathing could be heard. Each object was made especially for a particular space - ‘forgotten spaces’ - such as alley ways behind houses, cellars, a coal hole or a stairwell. François Eyck managed to capture the melancholy of these places in his photographs. A ghost could inhabit all of these places, giving each one a sense of fulfilment - its floating presense in each space, giving it expression."
