Vito Capone (Italy)

"In 1979 and 1980, after 22 years of pictorial experience, I embarked upon an exhaustive investigation into different materials: papers, hemp clothe, linen, reusable materials and wood. During this period, I explored the most wefts of paper and obtained some amazing results using a particular engraving technique. My work became paper: engraved, scratched, hollowed and shaped, carved; selected according to its thickness and quality.
(…) Paper lives, it gives and lends itself to forms of infinite variety, it changes in my hands, playing the leading role in a continuous game with light.
The first years of my research were characterized by the use of industrial paper with which I created several works. Nowadays I recycle paper, preferably until it is white, and dye it with vegetable materials. I then mix the resulting pulp with reed, cotton thread, hemp and other materials. I prefer to make simple papers rather than complex ones: the artistic effect is what interests me.
