Paul Johnson (England)

"When I started working with paper, I made ‘one of a kind’ books, but this soon developed into unique pop-up books and paper sculpture.
I use primarily Waterford watercolour paper for my work, and occasionally handmade Japanese paper and paper made by myself. Reactive dyes (industrial) are used for colouring, and finally waterproof inks are penned on to the surface.
The dyes are applied to the moistened paper so that the colours bleed. At any one time, I will have twenty or thirty sheets dyed in this way but in varying colour and texture combinations. Recently, I changed my whole style of using colour and my work in this exhibition represents my work 'before and after' this change of direction.(…)
