The forms that Van der Stoep creates are always organic but in addition she wants to approximate ‘reality’ as closely as possible. Papier-mâché makes this realisable: she can mould it exactly how she wants it. Her pieces look as if they really could exist. The ‘World Food Programme’ for example is a fictional public information campaign about genetically modified foodstuffs. In ‘Recycling of atoms’, she combines the different manifestations that one atom has in its earthly recycling. The atoms of a dead crocodile for example are absorbed by the Earth and turned to stone – ‘Crocodilite’.
